450+ teachers, pastors, and ministers of education journeyed to northern New Mexico last week to the Glorieta Conference Center. Featured speakers were Dr. Ed Stetzer, David Francis, and Phillip Nation. Dozens of Sunday School experts led breakout conferences as well, giving conferees an opportunity not only to hear the main speakers, but to also rub shoulders with practitioners who are subject matter experts in Sunday School. Transformational Church, LifeSpan, Connect-Grow-Serve-Go, and the book Great Expectations were all featured and the benefits to the church and Sunday School were explained in detail.
I led several workshops throughout the week and met numerous church leaders who came to learn and take back insights to strengthen their Sunday Schools. “The grass is greener where you water it,” not necessarily “on the other side,” I told conferees. Sunday School is hard work, but it works! Sometimes church leaders chase a new fad in ministry or a new curriculum that promise to revolutionize their small-group ministry, but the truth is that if they’d pour some water on Sunday School (time, effort, budget, training for leaders, etc), they’d see Sunday School get a lot greener!
